Inspection — British Schools Overseas (BSO) — Education Development Trust (DfE-approved, quality assured by Ofsted)

5–8 November 2023 (report published 22 December 2023, ref. 12/39/2023)
Outstanding

Inspected by a four-inspector team from Education Development Trust led by Daniel McGrorry. Doha College was judged an outstanding school providing an outstanding quality of education for pupils aged 3 to 18. It meets all BSO standards except those it is legally precluded from meeting under Qatari law (parts of the UK Equality Act 2010 covering gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, and sex/sexual orientation). The judgement is endorsed by the British government and is valid for three years.

Strengths

  • Outstanding attainment and progress in English, mathematics and science — well above England and international averages at every stage, with consistent outcomes for pupils with SEND.
  • Exceptionally well-planned curriculum: National Curriculum for England adapted with Qatari core subjects, plus High-Performance Learning in primary and 25 A Level options + BTEC + EPQ in Sixth Form.
  • Teaching and assessment outstanding across the school — strong subject knowledge, evidence-based practice and skilful questioning.
  • Pupils show excellent behaviour, confidence and analytical skill; ~70% take part in 300 weekly co-curricular activities, with ~200 in Duke of Edinburgh and a similar number in Model United Nations.
  • Safeguarding rigorous and aligned to best UK practice; pastoral systems and emotional-literacy support assistants praised by pupils and parents.
  • Outstanding purpose-built Al Wajba campus: well-equipped specialist facilities, two swimming pools, large outdoor sports areas, strong security.
  • Strong governance — elected board with parental, staff and British embassy representation holds the principal to account.

Areas to improve

  • In a very small number of lessons, teaching does not consistently consider the learning needs of all pupils. Further staff training on the school’s new assessment system, with regular analysis of individual progress data, would ensure every pupil progresses in line with their ability. (Sole development point in the report.)

Parent sentiment & editor notes

Considered Qatar's premier British school. Parents call it 'excellent' but 'academically rigorous' especially for primary years; demand for places exceeds supply; not-for-profit reinvests fees into facilities.

Pros: Not-for-profit British curriculum school in Qatar • Accreditations/memberships: BSO Inspected (DfE-accredited) — 'Outstanding' (Nov 2023), CIS, COBIS Accredited Member, HMC (Leading Independent Schools), IAPS, BSME • Carfax Education 'The Schools Index' — Top 100 Schools in the Middle East; Spear's Schools Index — Top 100 Schools in the World • MENA School Excellence Awards 2026 'Highly Commended' for School of the Year & Principal of the Year (only school outside the UAE recognised) • Strong A-Level and IGCSE results with 'best in the world/Middle East' awards; large extracurricular programme
Cons: Highly selective entrance test; competitive admissions expensive tuition and extra charges
